Got questions?

Is Lumina really free?+
Yes. Lumina is 100% free with no account required. Most features work instantly without any setup. Some advanced features (keyword research, AI content tools) use your own API keys from third-party providers. You only pay what you use directly to them.
What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?+
GEO is the practice of optimizing your content for AI-powered search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google's AI Overviews. Lumina helps you check which AI crawlers can access your site, verify your llms.txt file, and track AI-driven traffic through your GA4 data.
Does Lumina collect my data?+
No. All analysis happens locally in your browser. Lumina has no backend server, no analytics, and no tracking. API keys and OAuth tokens are stored in Chrome's local storage on your device. Read the full privacy policy for details.
Do I need API keys to use Lumina?+
No. Over 90% of features work without any keys — on-page audits, heading analysis, link checking, schema validation, robots.txt parsing, llms.txt checking, hreflang validation, JS vs No-JS, screenshots, and more. API keys give you access to keyword research (DataForSEO), AI content tools (OpenAI), and live GSC/GA4 data (free Google OAuth).
What permissions does Lumina need and why?+
Lumina needs activeTab and tabs to read the current page, webRequest for HTTP headers, scripting for on-page features like heading highlighting, and host_permissions for robots.txt fetching and API calls. All permissions are explained in the privacy policy.
How do free SEO tools compare to paid tools like Ahrefs or Semrush?+
Paid tools win on two things: massive backlink databases and historical data going back years. Free tools are better at on-page audits and technical checks you run once per page. For most sites under 10,000 URLs, a free stack covers the majority of daily SEO work. You only hit the wall when you need competitor backlink data or ranking history at scale.
Are free SEO tools effective for a real audit?+
Yes, if you know what to audit. A full technical audit (robots.txt, sitemap, hreflang, schema, headers, redirects) can be done entirely with free tools. What free tools can't replace is the judgment to prioritize fixes and decide what actually matters for your business. Tools show you problems; you still have to pick which ones to solve first.
Where should I start if I'm new to SEO tools?+
Start with the on-page audit. Run a meta tag analyzer on your top 5 pages, then check headings, schema, image alt tags, and internal links. These checks usually account for most of the easy wins on a small site. Once those are clean, move to technical SEO and performance.
What can't free SEO tools do?+
The limits are honest. Free tools can't maintain large-scale backlink databases or track rankings across thousands of keywords, because both require running a distributed crawler that costs real money to operate. Paid tools like Ahrefs and Semrush invest heavily in that infrastructure, which is where your subscription fees actually go. Free tools can analyze any single URL in seconds, but they can't maintain a database of the whole web.
